Focus Verse: Gen. 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Gen. 1:26   Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

God creates man in His image, man and woman, equal in the eyes of God, to reflect Him, to represent Him on earth. What this means is, though we are not God, we are more like God than anything else in creation. We are different from any other creature because we bear the image of God.

Man stands alone from the rest of creation. Physically, man is different from all other creatures; he walks upright. Mentally, man has the ability to reason and communicate with intelligence. Spiritually, man has the pleasure of knowing God. He created us to live in a loving, dependent relationship with him.

God is the same today as He was then. He’s still up to the same activities of bringing life from death, of bringing order out of disorder. He and He alone has the ability to create out of nothing.

What’s in an image? How valuable is an image? If you are like me, some of the most valuable possessions I own are the pictures, both digital and physical, that adorn my office, living room, and every corner of the house. If there was an impending disaster, I would want to protect these images. Why are they so important? Images of my family remind me of wonderful history, memories, and the growth we have experienced over the years. So when God’s Word says that you and I are made in His image, this is no small description. The image and imprint of the Lord upon our lives emphasizes the incomparable nature of humanity and our special relationship to God. Because we are created in the image of God, we are uniquely loved by the Creator. This should be the starting point of our self worth. Remember today that are created in the Imago Dei.  Beauty is but the sensible image of the Infinite. Like truth and justice it lives within us; like virtue and the moral law it is a companion of the soul.—Charles Bancroft

Gen. 1:26   Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Dominion, or the power to rule, is, in part, what it means to be an image-bearer. The sovereign God creates man in His image to serve as His representatives on Earth. It’s not just about birds and fish, it’s also about self and others. Ruling is linked to ideas of kingship, responsibility and stewardship. Think about it this way: the way we rule is a continuation of our worship to God. Are we being faithful to the things with which we’ve been entrusted? Are you ruling well?

“We see a large, slowly developing story: of the good creator God making a wonderful world, and putting a human in charge of it to rule it wisely and to gather up its grateful praise.” N.T. Wright, After You Believe: Why Christian Character Matters.

Gen. 2:15   Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

God is a personal God. He’s speaking to man because man needs God’s direction to know what to do here on earth. Adam was given a specific task – to be a gardener and guardian of Eden. God gave Adam a sense of responsibility: something meaningful and worthwhile to do. We see while living in God’s presence, He gives Adam protection, provision, and direction under God’s authority. He gives us the same opportunity to worship as we work and to show a fallen world His glory.

Gen. 2:18   And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

The Lord sees the isolated nature of Adam and emphatically declares (especially in the Hebrew) that it is bad for Adam to be alone. Ultimately, in the Lord’s sovereignty, He instituted marriage to break the chains of isolation and in its place, offered intimacy and relationship. This tells us much about the nature of our image and the character of God. God, who does not exist in “isolation but is a Trinity, surrounded by the heavenly court”, has created us for relationships (Waltke). You are created to live in relationship eternally with your Creator. You are created to be in relationship with others, and you are created to exist, grow, and commune within the body of Christ, the Church. Do you feel lonely today? Seek a relationship with the Lord. Have you destroyed your relationships with other or pushed them away? Ask God to help you see restoration, offer forgiveness, and find redemption in the Savior.

Okay, here’s how to do relationships—be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God, in Christ, also has forgiven you. – Chip Ingram

Prayer Connect

Lord, help us love our neighbors and enemies the same. Let us seek godly relationships where our Savior will be exalted and we call people to magnify the Lord with us.
